One restraint with traditional video is you can only see what is directly in front of the lens. Yet often times it is the situation around the framing that adds the intrigue. With advances in lens technology and frame stitching (think Google Streetview), we are entering a new era of directive film experiences.
A company called Condition ONE is putting this emerging technology in the hands of photojournalists on the front lines of the world’s conflicts and events allowing users to view in an 180 degree experience.
Red Bull was one of the early pioneers of the 360 degree interactive video with their Red Bull Surfing video. (video at bottom of page. Use mouse to direct camera).
It will be interesting to see how these experiences evolve as the technologies get into the hands of the average videographers.
