New way to make friends?

Presumably aimed at the Marxist, anti-capitalists out there that ironically posses an iPhone, the new Situationist app is inspired by Guy DeBord’s Situationist movement of the late 50’s and 60’s.

In short, DeBord deduced that mass media and advertising were central to advanced capitalist society and as such served to mask the reality of the affect capitalism has on us. The Situationists revolted against the conformist capitalist order and instead, advocated pursuing alternative experiences.

A lot less theoretical, but borne out of that idea, the app alerts members to each other’s proximity and gets them to interact in random “situations”.

“These situations vary from the friendly ‘Hug me for 5 seconds exactly’ or ‘Compliment me on my haircut’, to the subversive, eg ‘Help me rouse everyone around us into revolutionary fervour and storm the nearest TV station’. Members simply upload their photo and pick the situations they want to happen to them from a shortlist, in the knowledge that they might then occur anywhere, and at any time.”

In true anti-capitalist form, the app is of course free…
