Spending much of his youth on the streets and earning a meager wage for odd jobs on the docked ships in Sampaloc, Manila, Arnel Pineda tried to remain optimistic about his future. His hobby was to create cover versions of songs by Journey, Survivor, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Air Supply, The Eagles, Kenny Loggins and other popular acts from the 70s, 80s and 90s and uploading them to YouTube. 4 months after starting to upload to YouTube, Neal Schon of Journey contacted Pineda to invite him to audition. On December 5, 2007, Pineda was announced as the lead singer of Journey. Journey’s first album with Pineda, “Revelation” debuted at No. 5 in the Billboard Top 200 album charts, eventually achieving platinum status by October 1, 2008.
This story proves that young talented artists can be exposed to the world in a very easy fashion by simply putting their music on sites like YouTube. Free platforms are vital givens how difficult it is these days for young talent to get the correct contacts in order to succeed in the ever demanding music industry. If you can sing like Michael Jackson or play guitar like Hendrix or Clapton, sites such as YouTube and MySpace are the best place to go to get yourself noticed and, possibly, a record deal.
