The oldest known footage of New York City was shared around the studio last week. It shows late 1800’s New York in all it’s black and white glory, including Buffalo Bill riding his horse down Broadway. It is clear from the clip that NYC has always been the city that never sleeps. The grainy footage – along with a recent update from the MBNY team regarding their hunt for new digs – sparked a studio-wide flurry of favourite NYC quotes. In the words of the greats, from Woody Allen to Le Corbusier, here’s how NYC makes us feel.
Cities have sexes: London is a man, Paris a woman, and New York a well-adjusted transsexual.
– Angela Carter
There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless.
– Simone Beauvoir
New York is a beautiful catastrophe.
– Le Corbusier
One need never leave the confines of New York to get all the greenery one wishes—I can’t even enjoy a blade of grass unless I know there’s a subway handy, or a record store or some other sign that people do not totally regret life.
– Frank O’Hara
I love New York. You can pop out of the Underworld in Central Park, hail a taxi, head down Fifth Avenue with a giant hellhound loping along behind you, and nobody even looks at you funny.
– Rick Riordan
We were rocketed back into the 21st century with this friday afternoon contribution:
New York New York big city of dreams
And everything in New York ain’t always what it seems
You might get fooled if you come from out of town
But I’m down by law, and I’m from the Dogg Pound
– Snoop Dogg
