Word mapping

The British Library are currently compiling an archive of British dialects in order to capture and celebrate the diversity of spoken English today. A recent episode of Radio 4’s ‘Word of Mouth’ built on this fascination and spoke to a woman who had created a map of Portsmouth based on the local dialect and its various permutations. I think it’s wonderful to see an emphasis being placed on the sonics of an environment and fascinating to discover how the language of a place contributes so richly to the sensorial landscape.
